A Legacy Built Over Time

Tracing our roots and the foundation of excellence.

Dhakadakshin Government Degree College is a renowned educational institution located in Golapganj, Sylhet. It was founded in 1969 to make higher education accessible to students in this region. One of the key figures behind the college’s founding was Khirode Chandra Das Purkayostha, a respected headmaster who inspired the local community to take action. The college began with small resources but big ambitions, starting classes in shared classrooms before moving to its own campus. Today, it is affiliated with the National University of Bangladesh and offers Higher Secondary (HSC), Degree (Pass), and Honours programs. With a long tradition of community support, Dhakadakshin Government Degree College stands as a symbol of local unity, academic excellence and educational opportunity for rural students.

Introduction

The journey of Dhakadakshin Government Degree College began with the vision of local educators and community leaders in the early 1960s. After years of planning, the college was officially established in 1969. A large piece of land at Deor Tilla was donated by Majir Uddin Ahmed (Tunu Mia) and his family, making it possible to build a permanent campus. Initially, classes were held in nearby high school buildings while construction was underway. With support from local donors and the UK-based Dhakadakshin diaspora, the college gradually developed its own infrastructure. Under the leadership of Principal Nilotpal Barua, who served for over three decades, the college maintained strong academic discipline and community involvement. These foundational years laid the groundwork for long-term success.

Early Beginnings

Over the past five decades, Dhakadakshin Government Degree College has played a vital role in higher education in Sylhet. It has produced thousands of graduates who are now contributing in education, administration, business, and abroad. In 2012, Honours programs were introduced with support from overseas alumni. In 2018, the college was officially nationalized by the Government of Bangladesh, marking a major milestone in its history. Today, the college serves over 3,000 students across multiple disciplines. It continues to grow, with plans to improve facilities, expand academic offerings, and provide digital learning resources. Guided by its founding values, the college is committed to building an inclusive, modern, and forward-looking educational environment for future generations.
